Biographical Information

Tyler Cannon was drafted in 2009 and 2010.

Cannon was a shortstop, playing for his father in high school. He hit .462 and stole 25 bases as a junior while going 12-0 with a 0.84 ERA. He batted .279/.350/.354 as a college freshman, winning the starting shortstop job. Tyler fell to .252/.324/.345 in 2008 as a sophomore, but stole 14 bases in 17 tries. Primarily used at third, he also saw action at catcher, short and center. With the Bourne Braves that summer, he hit .265/.328/.325 but fanned in 38 of 117 at-bats.

As a junior, Tyler improved to .351/.444/.489 with 53 runs in 64 games while becoming a switch-hitter. He was 7th in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 17 steals, while only being thrown out twice, winning All-ACC honors at short. He was 6 for 10 with five walks in the 2009 College World Series, being named All-CWS at shortstop. The Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the 41st round of the 2009 amateur draft but he returned for a senior season.

His 4th year with the University of Virginia, Cannon had a batting line of .330/.408/.480 with 49 runs in 59 games. He set the school record for career games played and doubles. The Cleveland Indians chose him in the 12th round of the 2010 amateur draft. Assigned to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, he debuted as a pro on June 23, going one for four.
