Biographical Information[edit]

Tony Blanco was signed by scout Robinson Garcia for the Boston Red Sox in July 1998. He made his pro debut the next summer with the DSL Red Sox. His big league career consisted of limited action in the inaugural, 2005 season of the Washington Nationals after he had been selected in the 2004 Rule V Draft.

Blanco debuted in Japan on Opening Day 2009, hitting cleanup for the Chunichi Dragons and going 1 for 3 with a solo homer off Daisuke Miura. He made one error at first base. Tony spent eight seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball, making four All-Star teams and earning three Best Nine Awards with Chunichi and the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. He led the Central League with 39 home runs and 110 RBI for Chunichi in 2009 and slugged 41 more homers with a league leading 136 RBI with Yokohama in 2013. Overall in Japan, he batted .272/.351/.516 with 181 homers and 542 RBI in 750 games.

His son Tony Blanco Jr. signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022.
