Biographical information[edit]

The son of Don Zimmer and nephew of Hal Zimmer, Tom Zimmer was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the January 1971 amateur draft and then in the secondary phase of that year's June draft. Zimmer played in the minors from 1971 to 1975 and was a player-manager in 1977. A catcher, he began his professional career at the age of 19. He played until 1979, missing 1976 and 1978, hitting .247 in 318 games. He played in the Cardinals (1971-1975) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1979) organizations.

Zimmer was a Cardinals' coach in 1976. He was hired to manage the Wisconsin Rapids Twins in 1977, but quit in mid-April before the season started. He criticized the uniforms, playing field, clubhouse facilities and lights at Witter Field, and lodging facilities in Wisconsin Rapids, WI [1]. Assistant farm director Jim Rantz was assigned to manage the club on its opening eight-game road trip, before Carlos Pascual could arrive to manage the home opener.

Zimmer managed the 1977 Victoria Rosebuds, 1978 Butte Copper Kings, 1979 Shelby Pirates, and 1980 Salinas Angels. He then moved to scouting for the San Francisco Giants, a position he took in around 1981 and one he still held as of 2020. Zimmer later coached the St. Petersburg Pelicans of the Senior Professional Baseball Association.
