April 23: Today's featured birthday is that of Andruw Jones, who turns 47.
- 1918 - Barney Dreyfuss begins a campaign to ban the spitball; he will succeed and the pitch with be heavily restricted within a couple of years.
- 1934 - Casey Stengel gets his first managerial contract, signing on as the new head of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The former coach replaces Max Carey at the reins.
- 1964 - The Nankai Hawks and San Francisco Giants finalize a player development deal sending three minor Nankai prospects to the San Francisco minor league system. Controversy will erupt when one of them, Masanori Murakami, becomes a hot commodity.
- 1988 - Chicago aldermen vote 7-2 to allow the Chicago Cubs to add lights to Wrigley Field, finally making it possible for the Cubs to play night games there.
- 2006 - Roberto Kelly (pictured) resigns as manager of the Panamanian entry for the 2006 World Baseball Classic, feeling that some players were being held out to play in the Panamanian championships.
