April 23: Today's featured birthday is that of Andruw Jones, who turns 47.
- 1902 - John McGraw is hit by a pitch five times, but umpire Jack Sheridan refuses to grant him first base, saying he did not try to get out of the way. McGraw sits down on the field in protest.
- 1933 - Luke Sewell of the Senators retires two batters at home on the same play, tagging out Lou Gehrig and Dixie Walker of the Yankees.
- 1936 - The first Japan Professional Baseball League game is played. Nagoya deats Dai Tokyo, 8-5.
- 1972 - Yoshiro Sotokoba throws his third career no-hitter, tying the legendary Eiji Sawamura for the Nippon Pro Baseball career record.
- 1986 - Roger Clemens (pictured) sets a new major league record with 20 strikeouts in a game. Steve Carlton, Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver had shared the old record of 19.
