(Redirected from Tampa, Florida)

Tampa is a city located on Florida's west coast, on Tampa Bay, an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico. St. Petersburg, FL lies across Tampa Bay to the West. The name Tampa Bay is also used by various sports team which represent the metropolitan area formed by those two cities and other nearby ones such as Bradenton, FL and Clearwater, FL. The Tampa Bay Rays actually play in St. Petersburg, but have wanted for years to move to Tampa, closer to where most of the area's population resides. In 2018, the Rays identified a site in Tampa's Ybor City neighborhood as their preferred location for a new ballpark, but that fell through quickly due to the unavailability of financing.

Tampa is a traditional center of cigar production, hence the use of the name Smokers for many of its early teams.
