Biographical Information[edit]

Takashi Kawai pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 18 years.

Kawai was drafted by the Chiba Lotte Marines in the 3rd round of the 1998 NPB draft, and he had a 14.63 ERA in 7 appearances in 1999. His ERA was 4.71 in 22 appearances in 2000, then he went 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 2001. Kawai improved to a 2.76 ERA in 51 games in 2002, then he pitched 54 games with a 4.42 ERA in 2003. He struggled in 2004 as his ERA rose to 7.71 in 47 relief outings, then he allowed 12 runs in 13 1/3 innings in 2005.

The Marines traded him to the Rakuten Golden Eagles for Ken Shinzato after the 2005 season, and he was 2-1 with a 4.12 ERA in 2006. He only got 3 appearances in 2007, and he recorded a 3.58 ERA in 14 games in 2009 after staying in the minors for a year. Kawai was 3-7 with a 4.59 ERA in 2010, and he went 1-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 2011. He never pitched more than 10 games in a season after the 2011 season, and he announced his retirement in 2016.

Overall, Kawai was 28-36 with a 4.51 ERA, struck out 385 and pitched 622 1/3 innings in 18 seasons in NPB.
