Second division

The term second division formerly referred to a team that played poorly. At a time when the major leagues had eight or ten or twelve teams in a league, the "second division" technically referred to a team in the bottom half of the league, although the term was sometimes used colloquially - "they played like a second division team".

With the advent of true divisions in modern baseball, the term "second division" has faded away.
