Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Ryne Nelson was outstanding in his first two career starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022. In his major league debut on September 5th, he held the San Diego Padres scoreless over 7 innings, allowing 4 hits and no walks and striking out 7 to receive credit for a 5-0 win. In his follow-up start on September 12th, he tossed another 6 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits to the powerful Los Angeles Dodgers. However, his teammates were unable to offer him any run support, and L.A. scored 3 times in the 7th and anothe 3 times in the 9th for a 6-0 win, with his namesake, the unrelated Kyle Nelson, failing to retire any of the three batters he faced being charged with the loss.

Nelson was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 2nd round of the 2019 amateur draft, out of the University of Oregon, where he had been manly a relief pitcher, making just 5 starts in his three seasons. he caught scouts' attention by striking out 104 batters in 65 innings as a junior, although he did also walk 41. He went 0-1, 2.89 in 10 games for the Hillsboro Hops that year before being forced to sit out the 2020 season when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues. The Diamondbacks became serious about turning him into a starter in 2021, when he was the starting pitcher in all 22 of his appearances between Hillsboro now in High-A, and the Amarillo Sod Poodles in AA. He logged 116 1/3 innings and went 7-4, 3.17 while striking out 163 batters. In 2022, he spent the season in AAA with the Reno Aces of the Pacific Coast League where he was 10-5, 5.43 in 26 starts. His K rate when down to 128 in 136 innings in the hitter-friendly circuit, as he gave up 25 homers.
