Play at home plate
A play at home plate, also called a play at the plate for short, play at home base or play at homebase, occurs when a defensive player, usually the catcher, attempts to put out a baserunner attempting to score. The most spectacular plays at the plate occur when an outfielder throws out the baserunner. If the runner is out, the outfielder is credited with an outfield assist.
Due to the frequency of collisions between the catcher and the baserunner, plays at home plate have been one of the most dangerous plays in baseball, and over time rules have changed to ensure the safety of the players.
