Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Pedro León started his baseball career in his native Cuba playing two series in the Cuban Serie Nacional with Huracanes de Mayabeque in 2017-18 and 2018-19 with a lot of success as he batted .333 and .383 respectively, the latter year with excellent power as well. He then defected from the island and was eventually declared a free agent, allowing him to sign with the Houston Astros on [[January 15], 2021.

Pedro was immediately regarded as one of the top prospects in the Astros' organization, givien his success in Cuba, although the question was where exactly he was on the development ladder given his age - 23 - and recent lack of baseball activity. He was assigned to the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Double-A Central, where he hit .249/.359/.443 in 52 games. He was named to the American League team for the 2021 Futures Game, then a week later on July 17th was promoted to the Sugar Land Skeeters of Triple-A West. Unfortunately, an injury cost him all of August and forced him to undergo a short rehabilitation stint in the Florida Complex League, so that he played just 17 games in AAA, batting .131. To compensate for the time lost, the Astros then sent him to play in the Arizona Fall League after the season.
