Biographical Information[edit]

Olivo Astacio pitched five seasons in the minor leagues.

Astacio split 2002 between the GCL Red Sox (0-2, 6.35, 26 H in 17 IP) and DSL Red Sox (6.95 ERA in 7 starts, 21 BB in 22 IP). In 2003, he was 3-5 with a 3.19 ERA for the DSL Red Sox East. He split 2004 between the GCL Red Sox (3-4, 3.13) and DSL Red Sox (1-0, 5.25). He was on the restricted list in 2005. Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates for 2006, he went 2-3 with 9 saves, a 3.49 ERA and 39 whiffs in 28 1/3 IP for the Williamsport Crosscutters. He tied Joe Smith for third in the New York-Penn League. His most notable save was a 3-inning, 5-K, one-walk effort in relief of Henry Cabrera as part a combined no-hitter against the Batavia Muckdogs. In 2007, Astacio pitched for the Hickory Crawdads (1-1, 11 Sv, 3.54, 71 K in 48 1/3 IP), Lynchburg Hillcats (0-1, Sv, 8.22, 19 K in 15 1/3 IP) and Altoona Curve (2 BB, 0 H, 1 K, 0 R in 2 IP). He tied for 10th in the South Atlantic League in saves and tied Ronald Uviedo for 4th in the Pirates chain in that department. Baseball America rated him as Pittsburgh's #16 prospect at year's end. He attacked a teammate with a bat in extended spring training in 2008 and was released.
