Biographical Information[edit]

"Moe is short for molasses foot. In high school, I did not like to do wind sprints during football practice and always finished last. My high school coach, John 'Socko' Wothe, started the Moe business. Few people even know my real name." - Moe Burtschy, Baseball Nicknames

Moe Burtschy, born Edward Frank Burtschy in Cincinnati, was a tough, hard-throwing, right-handed reliever who pitched for the Philadelphia and Kansas City A's between 1950 and 1956. After graduating from high school in 1940, Burtschy signed a minor league contract, but he joined the Navy in September of 1940 and served aboard the USS Ticonderoga. Following his military service, he returned to the minors and, on June 17, 1950, made his debut with the A's. Moe appeared in 90 games during a five-year career and compiled a 10-6 record, with 97 strikeouts, a 4.71 ERA and four saves in 185 innings pitched. After retiring, he worked as a freight salesman in the trucking industry. He died of heart failure on May 2, 2004 in Cincy at 82.
