Biographical information[edit]

Mitch Zwolensky was a minor league pitcher who played from 1981 to 1988. He also spent two games in independent ball in 1994 and a game at that level in 1996. He played at the Triple-A level for four full seasons, but never made it to the major leagues.

Zwolensky was originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 1978 amateur draft, however he opted not to sign and went on to college instead. He was next drafted by the Rangers in the 11th round of the 1981 amateur draft, signing.

He began his professional career in 1981, splitting the season between the GCL Rangers and Asheville Tourists and going a combined 3-4 with two saves and a 4.50 ERA in 15 games (four starts). In 1982, he pitched for the GCL Rangers and the Burlington Rangers in the Rangers organization and the Wausau Timbers in the Seattle Mariners organization, going a combined 5-4 with a 2.24 ERA in 35 games (three starts). Had he qualified, he would have been third in the Midwest League in ERA.

Back in the Rangers organization, Zwolensky spent most of the 1983 season with the Tulsa Drillers, going 12-10 with a save and 3.33 ERA in 26 games (24 starts). He also made two scoreless relief appearances with the Oklahoma City 89ers that year, bringing his season ERA down to 3.27. He led the Texas League with 10 complete games and was 4th in ERA. With Oklahoma City in 1984, he went 7-8 with a save and a 4.36 ERA in 32 games (16 starts), and the next year he went 7-5 with a save and a 4.45 ERA in 18 games (14 starts) with the 89ers.

Beginning in 1986, Zwolensky pitched in the Chicago Cubs system. With the Iowa Cubs that season, he went 9-5 with a 5.13 ERA in 26 games (18 starts). The next year, he went 7-4 with three saves and a 4.43 ERA in 44 games (five starts) for Iowa. Zwolensky appeared in five games with the Pittsfield Cubs in 1988, going 1-3 with a 4.00 ERA.

In 1990 and 1991, Zwolensky served as the pitching coach for the Stockton Ports and held the same role for the 1993 Duluth-Superior Dukes. In 1994, he appeared as a player-manager in two games for the Brainerd Bears of the independent North Central League, posting a 0.00 ERA in one inning of work. In 1995, he coached in the Montreal Expos system. He started one game as a player-manager for the Prairie League's Minot Mallards in 1996, allowing two runs in two innings of work. He managed the Minot Mallards in 1997. He was the Prairie League Manager of the Year in 1996.
