Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Mike Wegener was selected by the Montreal Expos as the 15th pick of the 1969 expansion draft, coming over from the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Wegener stuggled with the Expos, posting a 8-20 record over two seasons with the club. Control was a major issue with his yielding over 5 walks per 9 IP during the 270 innings pitched in 1969 and 1970.
Wegener got his place in history on July 18, 1970 by surrendering the 3,000th hit to the San Francisco Giants' Willie Mays. Mays at the time was the 10th major league player to join the 3,000 hit club.
