Biographical Information[edit]

Australian Matt Haynes pitched in the minor leagues from 2002 to 2005. When he was signed by the Cleveland Indians on January 4, 2002, he had been a participant in the first Australian Baseball Academy organized by Major League Baseball, which included 60 amateur players. he was listed at 6' 3", 185 lb. as an 18-year-old at the time but grew another inch during his pro career.

He had a good first pro season, going 3-3, 3.93 in 13 games including 8 starts for the Burlington Indians of the Appalachian League, with 48 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings. Still very raw, he was sent back to the same level in 2003 and as a full-time reliever went 1-0, 2.50 in 17 games with 2 saves. He flashed some overpowering stuff, with 57 strikeouts (and 29 walks) in 36 innings, with just 25 hits allowed. In 2004, he moved up to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League where he was 4-4, 4.64 in 18 games, with 2 starts. His peripheral numbers continued to be good, with 35 hits allowed in 42 2/3 innings, and 52 strikeouts. Yet, he repeated the level in 2005, but things went south for him. He was 1-2, 5.77 in 18 games, and while he did pick up 2 saves, he allowed 39 hits and 21 walks in 38 innings while striking out 47. He did not pitch professionally again after that.

He returned to Australia where he worked in creative design in Queensland. He had studied graphic design in high school and completed a university degree in the field after his return home.
