Biographical Information[edit]
Mark Smartt has been a college coach. His son Chase Smartt played in the independent leagues.
Smartt was a second baseman at Troy University, hitting .405 in 1986 and being named All-Gulf South Conference twice. He hit .333 when Troy won the 1987 Division II College World Series. He remained as a student assistant in 1988-1989 then was at the University of West Alabama as assistant coach (1990-1994) and head coach (1995-2000, going 164-163). He then returned to Troy as an assistant for 2003 and moved up to head coach from 2016-2021. He was 172-135 in that role. He had been in a Troy uniform for 1,073 games as a player, coach and manager, a school record.
