Louis Nippert

Biographical Information[edit]

Louis Nippert was the principal owner of the Cincinnati Reds, alongside his wife Louise Dieterle Nippert during one of the club's most successful periods.

A grandson of James Gamble, founder of Procter & Gamble, he earned a law degree from the University of Cincinnati and practiced as an attorney. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1928 to 1932.

He first became a minority owner of the Reds in 1966, when he joined the ownership group headed by Francis Dale, then became principal owner on January 11, 1973 when he purchased 51% of the stock by buying out other owners. Those were the days of the "Big Red Machine" and the team won back-to-back World Series in 1975 and 1976. He was a hands-off owner, leaving most of the decision-making to General Manager Bob Howsam. In January of 1981, he sold most of his shares to two of the team's minority owner, brothers William Williams and James Williams. He did retain a small ownership share, which then went to his wife, who survived him by two decades, after his death in 1992.

In addition to the Reds, he was also a minority owner of the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League.
