General Manager[edit]
During the team's early years, the role General Manager was held by team manager Harry Wright who was also the team's secretary. Working with team treasurers Harrison Gardner and then Frederick Long, Wright was able to build a baseball dynasty for the city of Boston. After Wright left the team following the 1881 season, the club's triumvirate of Arthur Soden, William Conant and James Billings took over the role as "General Manager". In 1884 Billings replaced Allan J. Chase as treasurer, who had replaced Long in 1880. During the Triumvirate's era, the team's biggest signing was that of King Kelly which had been orchestrated by Billings. However with the appearance of the Boston Red Sox Billings' was ousted as treasurer with Soden taking over the role of treasurer. Following the sale of the Beaneaters to the Dovey Brothers, John Dovey assumed the position of Business Manager which was an early precursor to that of General Manager.
The Braves' first "true" General Manager, was team owner and president Bob Quinn, who held the position until poor health forced him to hand the position over to his son John.
