Biographical Information[edit]

Lee Weyer was a National League umpire from 1961 until his death in 1988.

Weyer began his career in the Midwest League in 1956-1957. He worked in the Southern Association in 1958-1959 and the International League in 1960 and part of 1961, missing most of the year due to an auto accident. He worked the NL in September of 1961. He entered military service in 1962 and was re-instated in July, working the rest of the season in both the IL and NL. Weyer was in the NL full-time starting in 1963.

On July 4, 1988, he was the first base umpire for an afternoon game between the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park then died of a heart attack later that day. Ironically, John McSherry was the home plate umpire in that final game, and he would also die of a heart attack on a day he worked a game, on Opening Day in 1996. Both umpires were large men built like football players, a physique that was preferred among umpires at the time.
