Biographical Information

Kevin Young played four seasons in the minors (going as far as AA) after a very good college career. He was an All-American one year in college and hit at least .284 in his three full seasons in the minor leagues.

College career

He hit .333/?/.517 with 13 steals for Central Michigan University in 1992. In 1993, he did not crack the Mid-American Conference leaderboard in average. In 1994, Young bounced back with a fine junior season, hitting .415/?/.777 with 62 runs, 63 RBI, 16 steals and 17 HR in 188 AB. He won the Triple Crown in the MAC, was named the All-Conference third baseman and Player of the Year. He was named the American Baseball Coaches Association All-American third baseman for NCAA Division I.

Pro career

The California Angels took Young in the 11th round of the 1994 amateur draft. He was initially assigned to the Boise Hawks, where he hit .233/.294/.304. Playing outfield only, he fielded .916. In 1995, Kevin was with the Cedar Rapids Kernels and hit .291/~.352/.372. He stole 17 bases but was caught 12 times. He came close to the Midwest League top 10 in batting average.

In 1996, Kevin continued to show good contact skills with the Lake Elsinore Storm. He hit .290/~.346/.353 and stole 24 bases, but was caught 14 times. He scored 78 runs, second on the club. In his last year, Young made it to AA with the Midland Angels, where he again was a regular in the outfielder. He hit .284/~.375/.441 with 64 runs and 6 triples in 103 games.
