Biographical Information[edit]

Jose Sepulveda played for the Puerto Rican national team in the 1990 Goodwill Games. In the 1990 Baseball World Cup, he tied Wilfredo Velez for the team lead with four games pitched but worked the fewest innings (3 1/3 IP), less than half of the next hurler (Mariano Quiñones). He struck out six and allowed five hits, a walk and three runs (one earned). He got Puerto Rico's lone save, getting the last out in Josue Salva's 5-3 win over Taiwan.

In the 1992 Olympics, he took over for Jose Mateo to close out a 9-0 loss to Bronze Medal winner Japan; he allowed two hits in 1 1/3 shutout innings, striking out one. Against eventual Gold Medal winner Cuba, he got another tough call. He relieved Orlando Lopez in the 5th inning of a 9-4 loss and again did well (3 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 R). His 1.93 ERA was second on the staff, behind Velez's 0.00 (Velez had an easier opponent, facing Italy rather than two medal winners).
