Biographical Information[edit]

John Raleigh went 1-10 in the majors but pitched much more successfully during several years in the Pacific Coast League.

Raleigh was born in Elkhorn, WI in 1887. To date, he is the only major leaguer born in Elkhorn and the only one born in Wisconsin in 1887.

He came to the majors at age 22, making his debut in August 1909 for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was used heavily as a starter during the rest of the season, appearing in 15 games, of which 10 were starts. His ERA, at 3.79, was not too much worse than the team ERA of 3.41. The 1909 Cardinals had a very young staff, with an average age of 24.

John won 20 games for the 1911 Vernon Tigers of the PCL, second on the staff to Roy Hitt, who won 21. Hitt, several years older, had pitched in the majors in 1907.
