Biographical Information[edit]
Jim St. Vrain had an excellent ERA in his one year in the major leagues, but is probably better known as a player who ran the wrong way.
Although he was a left-handed pitcher, St. Vrain batted right-handed. One day manager Frank Selee suggested he try batting left-handed; upon making contact with the ball, St. Vrain was confused enough to run to third base (he was thrown out at first base).
While his ERA was excellent, he gave up a lot of unearned runs, and that might have been why he did not stick with the major league team.
