Biographical Information[edit]
Jim McDonald started the first known triple play in West Coast baseball on April 4, 1880 while playing second base for the Athletics against the Californias in the California League.
He became a major league umpire after his playing career, working National League games in 1895 and from 1897 to 1899, with over 100 games each season. He is not to be confused with James McDonald, who was an umpire in the 1870s.
