Biographical Information[edit]
Hiroyuki Sakaguchi played in the Japanese industrial leagues and for the Japanese national team and later coached at the same two levels. In the 1991 Intercontinental Cup, he hit .311/.373/.511 and stole 5 bases in 6 tries. He scored 15 runs in 11 games, second in the Cup behind Jose Estrada. He was 5th in steals. In the Gold Medal game, a 5-4 10-inning loss to Cuba (Cuba's closest call of the early 90s), Sakaguchi was 0 for 5 with a walk from the leadoff slot.
In the 1992 Olympics, Sakaguchi batted .292/.414/.375, again serving as Japan's center fielder; he had 18 putouts and no errors in 8 games. In the Bronze Medal game, he hit 9th and was 1 for 3 with a walk and a steal in a win over Team USA to give his team a Bronze.
Sakaguchi coached for Japan in the 2003 Baseball World Cup, 2005 Baseball World Cup, 2006 Intercontinental Cup and 2009 Asian Championship.
