Biographical Information

Pitcher Hal Schumacher of the New York Giants won twenty games once in his career and was an All-Star twice, but perhaps his greatest career highlights are two World Series starts he made. In Game 2 of the 1933 Series, he allowed only five hits in a complete game victory over the Washington Senators. In 1936, he was the winning pitcher in Game 5 against the New York Yankees. At one point in that game, he retired three future Hall of Famers (Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, and Bill Dickey) in a row with the bases loaded en route to a ten-inning victory.

Schumacher was widely considered one of the better-hitting pitchers of his day, slugging 15 homers over his big league career.

Schumacher enlisted in the Naval Reserves in December 1942 and was discharged in November 1945.
