Biographical Information[edit]
Gary Pullins played three seasons in the minors then went on to a very successful college coaching career.
Pullins hit .242 as a junior at BYU in 1967, but improved to .395 with 54 runs in 48 games as a senior and helped the school reach the 1968 College World Series, the school's first College World Series trip. Signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers, he spent the summer with the Ogden Dodgers (8 for 40, 8 BB) and Daytona Beach Dodgers (.193/.289/.234 in 52 G). He fielded .976 at 2B for Daytona Beach and played there more than any of the club's other players. As a backup SS-OF for the 1969 Bakersfield Dodgers, he hit .199/.265/.277. In his last season as a player, he appeared for Bakersfield (2 for 31, 3 BB, 15 K) and Daytona Beach (5 for 22, 4 BB). He ended his minor league career with a .189 batting average.
After his playing career ended, he became a coach. He started the baseball program at Utah Valley State College and ran it for five years. He then became head coach of his alma mater, winning nine Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year awards. He was head coach at BYU from 1976-1999. During this time, he coached Wally Joyner, Rick Aguilera, Cory Snyder, Vance Law and Jack Morris among other future major leaguers.
In 1998, he was President of the American Baseball Coaches Association and he was enshrined in their Hall of Fame in 2003. Overall, he was 913-462-6 as a college coach. He also coached for Team USA in the 1993 Intercontinental Cup when they won the Silver Medal, the last time they would fare so well in an Intercontinental Cup.
