Biographical Information[edit]
“His one great fault was lack of control, and then, too, he was not showing a disposition for hard work. With a big string of pitchers, Fred Lake decided that Burchell would never rise to the heights of a swell major league workman and disposed of him to Buffalo, where he will no doubt do good work.” - Boston Globe, July 24, 1909
Fred Burchell saw time in four big league seasons, primarily over a three-year stretch (1907 to 1909) with the Boston Red Sox. In 49 games as a big leaguer, he was 13-15 with a 2.93 ERA, walking 92 men but striking out 124 in 285 2/3 innings. Fred later managed the 1912 Syracuse Stars, 1926 Newark Bears and 1930 St. Thomas Blue Sox.
