The statue of Robin Roberts, by Zenos Frudakis of Glenside, Pennsylvania, was erected outside the First Base Gate of Citizens Bank Park in 2004. Frudakis was commissioned to sculpt ten-foot bronze statues of four legendary Philadelphia Phillies for the new park--Steve Carlton sits at the Left Field gate, Mike Schmidt sits at the Third Base Gate, and Richie Ashburn sits in Ashburn Alley beyond center field.
Robin Roberts pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1948 to 1961 and was part of the 1950 "Whiz Kids" pennant winners. He finished his career out with the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs. Roberts was selected to 7 All Star Games and led the league in wins 4 times. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976 and his #36 is retired by the Phillies.
