Stiffer competition came to Norfolk in the form of Major League teams and professional ball players from other military units. Often the local Navy teams would take their act on the road and play at other shrines of baseball lore like The Polo Grounds (New York Giants), Comiskey Park (Chicago White Sox), and Griffith Stadium (Washington Senators). Here, Fred Hutchinson gets a hit against the Boston Red Sox during a 1943 game at McClure Field.
