Biographical Information

Known for his speed, outfielder Esix Snead stole over 500 bases in the minor leagues. However, he struggled at the plate and saw very little major league playing time.

Snead was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 18th round of the 1998 amateur draft and made his pro debut that summer with the New Jersey Cardinals. He hit .233 but stole 42 bases in 58 games to lead the New York-Pennsylvania League in steals. He hit just .186 between the Peoria Chiefs and the Potomac Cannons in 1999 but swiped 64 bases. Back with Potomac in 2000, he set a Carolina League record with 109 stolen bases. He led the Eastern League with 64 steals for the New Haven Ravens the following year but was selected off waivers by the New York Mets after the season.

Snead hit .252 for the Binghamton Mets in 2002 while again leading the Eastern League in steals with 66. This performance earned him a September call-up to New York. He hit fairly well in his brief major league stint that fall, posting a line of .308/.357/.538 to go along with 4 stolen bases in just 14 plate appearances spread over 17 games. He hit just one homer, but it was a walk-off three-run shot, against Dan Smith of the Montreal Expos with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning on September 21st, giving the Mets a 6-3 win. He spent most of the next two years with the Norfolk Tides, leading the International League in stolen bases in both years. He also played in one other big league game for New York, scoring a run as a pinch runner in 2004.

Following the 2004 season, Snead became a free agent and signed with the Atlanta Braves. Spending the entire 2005 campaign with the Richmond Braves, he once again lead the IL with 46 stolen bases despite being suspended ten games for his involvement in a brawl. He moved on to the Baltimore Orioles organization in 2006 but hit just .220 with 15 stolen bases for the Ottawa Lynx before being released in May.
