Biographical Information[edit]

Ernie Lush, brother of Billy Lush, played a game for the 1910 St. Louis Cardinals.

From the Bridgeport Herald, January 9, 1910:

". . . Ernie Lush . . . played with the West Ends . . . but it was down in New York that he caught the eyes of the scouts . . . he received his first offer . . . to go to Cincinnati . . . but Ernie did not care to go to that team. . . (later) when he was playing up in Niagara . . . he was asked to sign a contract with the Providence team. 'There was nothing doing', to quote Mr. Lush's words."

Finally, the president of the Eastern League heard that the famous Billy Lush had a promising brother named Ernie, and induced some scouts to look at him while playing semi-pro ball in New York City. He was signed, according to the article, by the New York Giants. The article continues:

"He has a beautiful arm and can run like a fiend . . . From a semi-professional team to the National League in one year is going some."

The article also contains a drawing of his face.

Ernie was apparently back with the Giants in 1911 - an article from The Day (New London, CT), April 28, 1911, says he was with them in spring training but was now looking for a spot in the Eastern League.

The New York Times of February 4, 1910 says that Ernie was a star football and baseball player at Villanova University, and claims that brother Billy recommended him to John McGraw.
