Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Ed FitzGerald ended his college career when he was drafted into the Army in 1943, serving in the Aleutian Islands and Germany in World War II. He returned stateside in 1946, signing a contract with the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast League, where his college coach Earl Sheely was now working.

A reliable backstop and an average hitter, FitzGerald possessed a strong arm which allowed him to throw out nearly 40 percent of base stealers - a very respectable average. FitzGerald played a dozen years in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Senators, and the Cleveland Indians. Following his playing days, he was an Indians coach in 1960, a Kansas City Athletics coach in 1961, and a member of the Minnesota Twins staff from 1962 to 1964. He then managed the Fresno Giants in 1965 and 1966.
