Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Don O'Riley was signed by scout Whitey Herzog for a $2,000 bonus in 1964. His playing career ended in 1973 when he injured his elbow in a motorcycle accident.

O'Riley was shot in a robbery while working in a convenience store in Kansas City, MO and died at age 52 on May 2, 1997. O'Riley got off a shot that wounded the perpetrator, but his own wounds proved fatal. His killer, a 20-year-old African-American man named Robert Muse, pleaded guilty to both 2nd degree murder and 1st degree robbery and was sentenced to 28 years to life in prison on the murder charge and 15 years on the robbery charge on January 12, 1999.
