Biographical Information[edit]

Leon "Doc" Martel was with the Philadelphia Phillies for 24 games in 1909 and the Boston Doves for for 10 games in 1910. He played catcher for Philadelphia and first base for Boston.

He apparently played and managed for the 1909 Steubenville Stubs under the name John Hanlon.

He is a member of the Georgetown University Football Hall of Fame. Martel is listed as having attended Georgetown between the years 1902 and 1909, a time when several other future major leaguers were also there. Yet another major leaguer named "Doc", Doc White, had attended Georgetown earlier but was still in the majors when Doc Martel made his debut.

According to Sporting Life in 1906, he couldn't agree to terms with Boston, and was going to be sent to the minors, but he chose instead to play for an independent club.
