Jones was born in Pittsburgh, PA, moved west to go to high school in Waukegan, IL, and went still farther west to attend college at Creighton University in Nebraska in 1989-1991. Creighton had a number of future major leaguers there at the time, including Dan Smith (1988-1990), Mike Heathcott (1988-1991), Scott Stahoviak (1989-1991), Kimera Bartee (1991-1993) and Alan Benes (1991-1993).
Jones signed in 1991 and hit .306 with the Everett Giants that year. He spent most of 1992 in the Midwest League with the Clinton Giants and then played for the Shreveport Captains in 1993. From 1994-1997 he was with the Phoenix Firebirds, and then in 1998 played for the New Orleans Zephyrs. He was in independent ball in 2000.
As of 2011, Jones has been working with the State Department to show the finer points of baseball to youths from other countries.
