Biographical Information

Pitcher Danny Core pitched five seasons in the minors and two in Taiwan (through 2009).

Core pitched for the US when they won Gold at the 1999 World Junior Championship. He was 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA, allowing six hits in 12 innings to have the best ERA of any US pitcher with more than one inning, beating out Carmen Pignatiello by .10.

Core was 5-3 with 72 strikeouts as a freshman at Florida Atlantic University despite missing time with injury. He spent that summer with the Hyannis Mets. Danny went 7-8 with a 4.42 ERA as a sophomore, striking out 103 in 108 innings in 2001. In 2002, the junior was 6-2 with and made All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors. He set school records for career wins and strikeouts.

He was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the seventh round of the 2003 amateur draft. He played parts of five seasons in their organization, never reaching above the Class A level. Core debuted with the 2003 Auburn Doubledays, going 6-2 with a save and a 3.14 ERA.

In 2004, Danny was 9-8 with a 3.32 ERA for the Charleston AlleyCats, tying for the South Atlantic League in starts (28). He tied Tony Peguero for 9th in the Sally League in ERA. The next season, the right-hander pitched for the Lansing Lugnuts (8-9, 6.32) and Dunedin Blue Jays (11 R in 13 2/3 IP). For 2006, Core had a 5-4, 4.41 record for Dunedin with 87 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings.

Danny began 2007 back with Dunedin but bombed (30 R, 42 H, 18 BB in 27 1/3; 2-1, 6.91) and was let go. He was signed by the Kansas City T-Bones of the independent Northern League and was 4-1 with a 3.57 ERA, striking out 53 in 40 1/3 IP. He had gone 34-25 with a 4.49 ERA overall in the minors.

He was with Brother Elephants of the Chinese Professional Baseball League in 2008 and 2009. The first year in Taiwan, he was 9-5 with a 3.52 ERA as the Elephants' #3 starter after Yu-Cheng Liao and Ryokan Kobayashi. He got the call in game 3 of the 2008 Taiwan Series but walked four in 1 1/3 IP and was yanked despite having not given up a run yet. On short rest the very next day, he was burned for 5 hits, 4 walks and 4 runs in a loss to the Uni-President Lions and Luther Hackman. He fell to 0-2, 6.43 in '09, battling injury, and was quickly released.
