Congressional Gold Medal of Honor
The Congressional Gold Medal of Honor is the highest award which may be bestowed by the Congress of the United States. The decoration, commonly referred to simply as the Congressional Medal of Honor, or Congressional Gold Medal. It is awarded to any individual who performs an outstanding deed or act of service to the security, prosperity, and national interest of the United States of America. The recipient does not need to be an American citizen.
The Congressional Gold Medal of Honor has been awarded to three former major league baseball players, all posthumously.
- Roberto Clemente on May 14, 1973 by P.L. 93-33, 87 Stat. 71
- Jackie Robinson on October 29, 2003 by P.L. 108-101, 117 Stat. 1195-1197
- Larry Doby on December 17, 2018 by P.L. 115-322, 132 Stat. 4440
Clemente's medal erroneously has his name listed as Roberto Walker Clemente instead of Roberto Clemente Walker. Doby's medal was given to his family on December 13, 2023, the 100th anniversary of his birth.
