Biographical Information

Billy Redmon, also called Billy Redmond, played in the National Association and the young National League in the 1870s. Although much about him is unknown, one source says he was born in 1853 and died in 1894, and that he played in the minors in 1876 and after his major league days. Most of his playing time was with the 1878 Milwaukee Grays, where he hit .230 in 48 games principally as a shortstop.

The St. Louis papers reported on April 12, 1876, that he had just got married. This information led researchers to trace the marriage certificate of William T. Redmund and Mary McCann on April 10, 1876. He is listed in St. Louis city directories over the following years, which have him working as a bricklayer and mention two daughters. In 1895, his wife is listed as a widow; that information made it possible to find a death certificate for one William T. Redmond. The spelling of his last name seemingly changes with every encounter, but it is clear that the various names refer to a single person. He was buried in St. Matthew Cemetery in St. Louis. His gravestone spells his name Readmon.
