Biographical Information

Outfielder Billy Baldwin was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 1972. With the Lakeland Tigers in 1974, he hit .306 and led the Florida State League with 150 hits and 12 triples while being named the circuit's MVP. He was called up by the Tigers the next summer, 1975 and made his big league debut on July 29th, going 1-for-4 against the New York Yankees. After hitting .221 with 4 homers for Detroit, he was dealt to the New York Mets, along with Mickey Lolich, for Rusty Staub and Bill Laxton. Baldwin spent most of the 1976 campaign with the Tidewater Tides, hitting .271 with 17 home runs and 72 RBI. Called up by the Mets in September, he hit .273 in 24 games and clubbed his final homer, a game-winning walk-off shot, against the Chicago Cubs on September 24th. Baldwin died in June 2011, a few weeks after his 63rd birthday.
