History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1875 St. Louis Red Stockings represent the only season in which the St. Louis Red Stockings played in the National Association. They went 4-15 that year, under the guidance of manager Charlie Sweasy, finishing 10th in the 1875 NA, out of 13 teams. It was the final season of the circuit, and the Red Stockings, like most of the teams who played that season, did not make it into the newly-formed National League in 1876.

They played their home games at Red Stockings Park, the only year the ballpark hosted a major league team.

Ironically, there was another team called the "Red Stockings" in the league that year - the Boston Red Stockings - and another team based in St. Louis, MO - the St. Louis Brown Stockings. The ensuing confusion has resulted in the St. Louis Red Stockings falling into obscurity. Among the more celebrated players on the team were C Silver Flint, manager Sweasy, who played second base, and OF Tom Oran, the first major league player born in California.
