MLB Amateur Draft Picks who came from “san bernardino” – Baseball-Reference.com

26th May 2010

MLB Amateur Draft Picks who came from "San Bernardino" - Baseball-Reference.com

As a followup to my previous post on school type in the draft data, we just updated about 1,200 more schools, so there are now just 1,200 out of 61,815 total draft picks for which we lack school data (or about 10-20 each year). We've also continued to standardize school names so players from the same school all show up together.

In case, you are curious, we show 23,592 players from 4-year schools, 23,426 out of high school and 13,554 from juco's.

Search Baseball Draft Picks by Type of School Attended — Baseball-Reference.com

21st May 2010

1st Round Draft Picks in the MLB June Amateur Draft, with a listed position of C From High Schools - Baseball-Reference.com.

This afternoon, we added an option to the draft (look just below the first set of options for "Type of School Drafted From") that allows you to pick out players based on the type of school they attended: 4-year schools, jucos or high schools. We've characterized schools for about 80% of the picks, and should have most of the remainder done early next week. Some of these were sorted algorithmically, so please let us know if you find any schools that were miscategorized.

One nice thing you can do with this select a type of school and enter a two-letter state abbreviation in the Came From option and get things like All of the 4-yr School Draft Picks from Michigan schools, and then sort them by who had the most wins above replacement, or overall pick or year or position.

Draft: Search by Position and Round

18th May 2010

1st Round Draft Picks in the MLB June Amateur Draft, with a listed position of SS - Baseball-Reference.com

Inspired by an article at FanGraphs on the value of first rounders by position, I've added an output that shows you players drafted from a particular position and a particular round. Above I've linked to all of the first round selections who were shortstops when drafted.

It is an option on the second line of options.

WAR data added to the B-R Draft Section

18th May 2010

1st Round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft - Baseball-Reference.com.

Having this WAR data onhand is kind of fun. I added a column for total WAR (note pitchers include their batting WAR) to the draft pages. At the bottom of the page is the overall production for the players shown and the averages among the players who made the majors.

Some examples:

Cardinals First Round Picks

Players drafted out of Iowa

The Royals 1992 draft

Linking Draft Data to Minors Data

8th June 2009

Amateur Draft: 3rd Round of the 2005 June Draft - Baseball-Reference.com.

It's a little late given the draft is tomorrow, but we've managed to get the 2005-2008 draftees linked to their minor league stats. Previously only the major leaguers were linked to their stats. This will make things a whole lot more useful as you can now see what a player was able to do even if he didn't make the majors.

Next on the list for the draft is.

1) Enter the 2009 draft.

2) Link pre-2005 seasons to minor league stats

3) Add a column for highest level reached in the draft output.

4) add draft info to the minor league pages.

2009 MLB Draft Preview

2nd June 2009

2009 MLB Draft Preview - Baseball-Reference.com

I put together a little preview of the 2009 draft. It lists the draft order and then the number of players at that slot to make the majors and then the five best players as determined by Hall of Monitor and Years of Service combined. It's a rough measurement, but the results make sense I think. We've also added a little front page module that highlights the voluminous draft info we have on the site.
